I will be transitioning my classroom into ‘Flexible Seating.’ In simple terms, my classroom will not be the rows or groups of desks and chairs. But instead, it will be a combination of high tables, low tables, chairs, stools, mats, pillows, floor options, etc. These different options allow students to choose which learning environment would be best for them. Research shows that kids are able to focus and do their best work when they’re comfortable, and this new seating will allow my students to be comfortable while still being engaged in the classroom. They will also have the flexibility to change up their seating choice every day because there will be no assigned seating to guarantee optimal student choice. To make the most of any donations I receive, in addition to my own investment, I plan to utilize a lot of used furniture options to cut the costs. Because not only do I need to start purchasing different forms of seating and surfaces, but I need to have options for students to work efficiently and comfortably from the floor if that is how they best succeed.
