In order to develop a love of reading, students need an opportunity to read engaging texts, and EVERY student needs to be able to touch the book being read. By having a classroom set of Mr. Popper's Penguins and No Talking, my students will be able to personally experience these novels by engaging with the text one-on-one. The benefit of using novels to teach reading is five-fold. First, it builds background and world knowledge. Second, it builds an authentic vocabulary. Third, it enhances communication and dialogue skills. Fourth, it helps to develop social skills. Finally, it engages the student and creates an excitement for learning.
