Developing a classroom community where students feel safe, respected, and cared for takes time, patience, and resources. By focusing on community building at the beginning of the year I am able to support my students as they cultivate a safe learning environment where they are willing to take academic and social-emotional risks, which in turn leads to greater academic outcomes later in the year. To develop community students need opportunities to practice respectful communication, collaborate around problem solving, and cooperate towards a common goal. In order to do this, teachers must implement thoughtful and scaffolded activities that help students build trust with one another. Many of the community building activities that I utilize with my students come from two courses that I have taken over the years: The Caring Classroom and Developmental Designs. For example, one problem solving activity asks students to figure out how to get everyone across the classroom by only stepping on spots/markers. The extra challenge is that any spot that is not being touched by a student gets taken away and they are left with less spots to use in the task. Students must collaborate around how to approach the problem, communicate effectively with one another, and cooperate so that all students make it across the classroom. Therefore, the resources I am asking for support with will help students engage in activities, such as the one I described, to give them structured opportunities to extend their communicative, collaborative, and cooperative skills with one another, all of which will help them to be successful in and out of school.
