Third grade students are naturally curious about the world around them. This project will provide students with a subscription to Scholastic News, a cross-curricular non-fiction magazine that focuses on current events and topics kids will want to know more about. It is an engaging resource that will build literacy and comprehension skills, student confidence and reading stamina. “A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.” – Sasha Salmina. In adding this resource to my classroom, my hope is to create a literacy rich environment and to provide materials that help my students engage in positive reading behaviors. It is essential that children practice the things good readers do such as ask questions, make predictions and forge connections with material they are interested in reading. The magazine will be used to supplement resources for small group reading instruction and for independent reading. The class will be eager to receive these resources!
