For the beginning of the year, my students need to feel comfortable. I have studied the development of the brain and neuroscience. I have focused on what happens to a child's brain when they are exposed to trauma, abuse and neglect at a young age. As I have learned about the brain, I have realized how I can make a difference in students who exhibit this behavior in a negative way. I believe that all behavior is communication. I can help my students by teaching them brain aligned strategies. I teach students to think with their prefrontal cortex and not from their amygdala. I teach them about their brains and give them real life strategies they can use to self regulate. To do this, I need a "softer" classroom that allows them to feel comfortable and more at home, a place where they can move fluidly. Items such as flexible seating and sensory toy will allow me to create a welcoming environment for my students.
