My students would benefit from having a class set of the Sunshine State Readers because reading for fun helps students develop crucial reading skills needed for success in the classroom, state testing and in life. Success in reading will also help academically motivate students and build their self confidence. Our school has many reading programs that I would like to motivate my students to participate in because I am a firm believer in their correlation to success. If students read the sunshine state readers they can earn 7-15 points per book when an AR test is taken. AR points are rewarded and the highest prize is an all night lock-in party at the end of the year. If students complete the list of books, they will become a Sunshine State Reader and get their picture posted in the library. They will also have read over 1,000,000 words. This makes them eligible for our school's Millionaires' club. This club is very elite at our school! It is an honor and highly celebrated. Students names are posted in the library and students and their families are invited to ceremony and a catered luncheon. Students receive a medal based on their level of words read. Unfortunately, many students do not participate in these programs because they do not have access to these books at home because of the low socioeconomic status of our students' families. If these books are available in my classroom, students will be able to read them at school or borrow them to read at home. These books are often new releases and are more expensive than the typical book. I believe this project will benefit my students in many ways.
