Soon I will be teaching fourth graders in a regular public school. It is wonderful that grants and federal funds are provided for schools in low-income areas, but it is important that students in regular public schools are given excellent learning tools as well. Perhaps this is one reason why the United States ranks 14th in education in comparison to Japan, Singapore, Finland and other countries who focus on their top learners. For my students in this year’s class and those that I teach during the next five years or so, we will be using Chromebooks (similar to iPads but less expensive) to meet the literacy and mathematics needs of all 26 students in my fourth grade classroom on an individual basis. It is exciting to find (after 17 years in the classroom) a teaching tool that meets the needs of students on both ends of the learning spectrum. It is my desire to help students be excited about progressing and learning “just the way they are”. Students will be introduced to their Chromebook Buddies during the first week of school. By the second week, each student's mathematics and literacy levels will be assessed so that students can begin right where they are. During the third week of school, student/parent-teacher conferences will be held. At that time students will show the i-Ready program to their parents and determine how parents can best help and support their child, myself, as their teacher, and the Chromebook Buddy teaching tool. With the help of the requested Chromebooks, each student will be continuously assessed and monitored throughout the year.
