My students need folders and binders to organize and maintain their in-class and at-home tasks. As I have been doing my part to teach and improve outcomes in Detroit high schools, one common theme I have developed is a lack of personal organization. Taking this first step to put folders and binders into the hands of each of my students along with mini-lessons on the importance and value of organization will allow students to become more accountable to their own education and its maintenance. These ideas will continue to grow into our very own community. The students will use their folders to house movable, temporary items from home to school and back that will allow them to explore certain constructs of organization and upkeep. The students will use their binders to hold valuable pieces of their work that they will show off to others and evaluate each others work in context of our organization mini-lessons. Projects, research, data, best/worst pieces of work in the class, and other important documents will be kept in their binders that will remain in the classroom. A future goal of this project is to continue to build upon our classroom culture of organization and slowly develop ideas of how we can better organize certain aspects of our own community as well as articulate a clear reason for making the choices that they will throughout the school year.
