In 1st grade, my students will "shop" for books they are interested in every single day. This means they are going through labeled book baskets to try to find a book they are interested in that is also a "just-right" book for their reading level. Students are flipping through the baskets and also taking baskets on and off the shelves in order to find the best book to read during our Reading Workshop. Currently, I have shelves that are not the most sturdy and do not offer the most space for students to maneuver through the books/baskets. All children should have access to the best literacy experience, beginning with an organized, safe classroom library that brings them joy. The shelves I am asking for would allow my learners this opportunity and make shopping for books the best experience possible.
