Students read when they are interested in something. Scholastic magazines provide images, captions, vocabulary and current ideas. Students need time to read for fun and not always for academic purposes. If we can get students to read for 20 minutes a day in their new language they will acquire vocabulary twice as quickly. We have to get them the tools, and the tools are magazines and books. Scholastic magazine also has an online component with their subscription that my English Language Learners can access. The subscription provides multiple reading levels, an audio with Text-to-Speech for visual and auditory learners and videos with closed-captioning to expand background knowledge.
