My students need class sets of 35 of two novels, Fish in a Tree and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book One: The Lightning Thief that will teach life lessons as well as stoke student creativity. We also will need 70 blank Books for utilizing the common core state standards and materials where the students can write their own historical novels. My students will learn how to be great readers and writers and utilize common core state standard skills. They will also learn how to write their own historical fiction novel, which will connect their Social Studies curriculum with English Language Arts. My students will create fictitious characters that exist during actual time periods of Nevada history. Students will learn how to research, how to cite sources, and how to create a historical diary based on the character they create. Using their imagination, knowledge of history and writing conventions, as well as applying a historical diary format utilized by popular childrens writers of this genre, my students will create a historical diary novel that incorporates both ELA and Social Studies knowledge and skills.
