This upcoming year, my students and I are piloting a year round school program in our county that is located right outside of Richmond, Virginia. Research shows that this type of schedule will greatly improve retention rates among students. Along with switching to year round school, I believe that my students would benefit from many different seating options in the classroom. As the 3rd grade reading teacher, I plan to have my students learning to work independently, frequently, while I work with small groups of other students in the class for more direct instruction. I know I find it difficult to work when I am not comfortable. Sitting in a hard chair all day is not allowing my students to be as successful as I know they can be. By adding in many different seating options, my students will be able to work independently in places that they have chosen because they know they can be successful there. By adding many different seating options into my classroom, I know that my students will feel more at home and be more successful in my classroom.
