Yes, I want my students to read a real-life, actual, paperback book with pages and everything! Gone are the days of "Read Chapters 1-3, Quiz on Friday." The idea is with their own book they can do the required reading at home, and come to class prepared to discuss the readings and complete assignments. In my class we have student-led, mini book clubs. By discussing their readings they improve comprehension and critical reading skills. While we are reading The Giver we will be pairing it with poems and informational pieces. By spending less time in class reading, we can do more with the material read! This first book will be an anchor piece for the year.
