What are deemed classic works of literature certainly have their place in the literary canon, but in our classroom, my students will be exposed to a wider range of reading material. Books represent the human condition. Our class library, full of books graciously funded by people like you, will help my students tap into different kinds of human experiences. Because reading can help us unpack our own life circumstances, my students need to be able to read about characters whose identities could be similar to their own. Learning about the struggles and triumphs of Malala or the fictional Watson family can help my students analyze their own places in the world. To be global citizens, we must be able to empathize with a spectrum of experiences; reading helps us do this. Further, reading about personally relevant topics could help my students develop more fully a lifelong love of selective reading.
