The true beauty of music is that it connects people. Music not only connects people, it also connects learning. My grade level partner and I are working together to bring music into our school. The recorders she is requesting and the music books and other accessories listed here will begin our students' musical education and be used as a supplemental tool to develop literacy and life skills. Students will learn the fundamentals of music and life. Gradually, they will identify, read, and play musical notes and signs by sight. Sight reading skills are required in English Language Arts reading to generate fluency. Also, students will develop a trained ear which translates into listening skills critical for comprehension and collaborative conversations. These young musicians will perform different genres and cultural musical arrangements at school functions. With continuous exposure to different cultures, students will continue their path as global citizens by increasing their knowledge and awareness of cultures that exist in our school, community and world. In addition, learning a musical instrument builds teamwork, confidence and responsibility. Therefore, the recorders not only teach music, they will also teach supporting skills like sight reading, listening, teamwork, responsibility, build student confidence and awareness of other cultures. Theses skills are vital in supporting standards-aligned content and developing life skills.
