These third-grade students are at a crucial time in their lives: a time when they transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. It is imperative that each and every student in this classroom develops a love of reading at this age so that they may grow into passionate, literate, curious, and empowered adults. In order to spark this life-long love of reading, our class community needs two key items: engaging books and comfortable seats. Engaging books, like Captain Underpants (a crowd favorite) and Junie B. Jones, get students to choose to read instead of play video games or watch tv. These books get students to want to turn the next page, read the next chapter, pick up the next book in the series. Comfortable seating options, such as bean bags and folding cushions, encourage students to "cozy up" with a good book and see the genuine joy in reading. With your help, each and every day during independent reading time, students will be able to choose a seat and a book. With these two small items, our class can grow into life-long readers, thinkers, and creators.
