I've never been a stickler for how students complete assignments or how it looks when visitors enter my classroom. I like to consider my classroom a "lived-in, working" learning environment. It's a bit louder, a bit messier at times, a bit more interacting, and a bit more fun! Making sure that students are sitting with their bottoms in a chair is not one of my top priorities as a teacher. Flexible seating will give my students multiple ways of being comfortable while they learn. Many of my students have ADHD or are easily distracted and love to move around. They often prefer to stand instead of sitting in their chair or they will sit incorrectly in chairs, which poses a safety issue. Having a classroom rug will allow them to be comfortable while playing games, using their laptops, or reading one of their favorite books. This past year I had one stool that I brought from home. When I taught younger students, I never let them sit on it due to thoughts that they might fall. However, when I began teaching older students they all would want to use the stool when working on their tasks. My students will also enjoy the wobbly chairs, as it will allow them to still be active while learning. Having more stools and different kinds of seating will be yet another way that makes this extra math or reading class different from their homeroom classes. Another way to give them a learning environment different than the traditional classroom.
