I have been introducing different types of flexible seating within my classroom for the last few years to increase engagement and aid all students in achieving success in the classroom. I was able to introduce some yoga balls, wobble stools, standing desks and floor options with the support of my school and our PTA but I want to have a fully flexible classroom and for that I need you help! The wobbles stools are the most expensive item but I have found them to be most effective when students use them correctly. The stools allow students to move around in their seat and fidget while still focusing on their work. The other options will allow students to not only choose the type of seat they will learn best in, but also the area of the classroom (ex. bean bags with clipboards, floor seats to spread out on the carpet and stability balls to allow movement). My goal with the flexible seating is to allow students the ability to become more independent, self aware, and allow them to take ownership of their own learning. The overall focus of my classroom community is to foster more then just learning of the curriculum but to engage students, give them skills needed to be successful in the 21st century and push them to become independent life long learners. The access to flexible seating helps to promote these goals.
