This year, I will be making the move from fourth grade to second grade. As I am changing grade levels, there are many materials that would help my class’s productivity throughout the day that I do not have. As an example, I really would like my students to have flexible seating and educational centers within the classroom to optimize how they use their time and how they learn. Working in a Title I school, I have students with a variety of different backgrounds and learning styles. Because of these different learning styles, my goal is to have materials in the classroom that will be multi-functional and be able to help all of the students learn the course material regardless of the way they learn. To do this, my students will need to work at different educational centers throughout the classroom during guided reading when they are not working in small groups. But that won't be the only time we use them. In fact, they will use these educational centers again during math rotations. The items I have included that support center activities are reading comprehension games, word work activities, math game library, and math puzzles. These materials will help my students stay engaged and actively learning within center time. The other key aspect of my classroom will be the flexible seating plan. Flexible seating will allow my students the ability to work around the classroom in a less restrictive environment. The items I have included that support flexible seating within my classroom are comfy floor seats. We all know that young kids such as second graders come with high energy levels and flexible seating will allow them to move freely around the classroom to help them burn off that energy while also helping them to increase focus on assignments.
