As a teacher, whenever I attend professional development seminars, I leave the day stiff and sore after sitting for hours in chairs at desks. It makes me realize my students experience this daily in school classrooms. It is no wonder they become fidgety in their seats and find every excuse to get up and roam the room. I have never seen so many pencils sharpened and tissues used because the students need an excuse to move. Lack of focus and decreased learning is a direct result of the discomfort and distractive movement. I want to create an atmosphere of comfort and encouragement as a way to promote a productive learning environment. With a very regimented structure, it is my goal to present students with a variety of seating options such as standing tables, wobble cushions, exercise balls, and floor seating to promote student engagement. Studies suggest physical movement and comfort help increase student learning. A variety of seating options available will allow students to find what works best for them. By using the updated environment responsibly, students will be able to take an added ownership in their own learning experience. The goal at the end of the school year is to celebrate an increased amount of individual student success.
