We need books for our classroom library. We need the novel sets like Chocolate Fever and James and the Giant Peach so I can teach reading in guided literature circles. The books will be housed in our classroom library. Each day the students will select good-fit books to read during independent reading time. For example, a student may browse the classroom library and choose to read Roald Dahl's, BFG during his silent reading time. He will read independently and then answer questions about his reading in his reading response log. After independent reading, he will gather his materials and head over to the guided reading table where he meets with me and a few other students. Here we discuss the the story elements and literary techniques from the novel Charlotte's Web. Students will also have the opportunity to borrow a picture book such as Goodnight Moon or a novel such as Treasure Island from the classroom library and enjoy reading the book with a partner. Current research supports shared reading as an integral avenue for building fluency and comprehension. Classic literature and popular, good reads in our classroom library will build a love of reading and form a foundation for a lifelong love of learning. These books will also be a springboard to teachable moments serving as resources for teachers like myself. I will be able to listen to children read aloud and perform informal reading assessments to tailor my future reading and writing lessons.
