The important areas of instruction for students with severe disabilities include consumer skills, domestic and self-help skill, and generalizable work skills. These work skills include following directions, sequencing, measuring, and working as a team. What better way to generalize academic and work skills for severely disabled students than with building something together? Their learning would not be just an internal process that truly is nothing to celebrate. I mean, so what if you are 14 years old and can finally count mixed coins and paper money! There, in the school courtyard for all to see, is a substantial project that you, whom no one really valued, constructed with your own two hands. It is the centerpiece to an outdoor learning experience that disabled and non-disabled can explore together. The chicken coop kit with a drill and project kit will be important for demonstrating reading and math skills. In addition, the tools we use will build fine motor skills and reinforce safety lessons. Working together with each other will improve communication and social skills. Who knew building a chicken coop was great school curriculum!
