Last year, I started incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) activities into my first grade classroom. Each time we did these activities, the students were excited and engaged. They kept asking for more STEM activities. It invigorated their minds and their creativity soared. Also, it gave great opportunities for cooperative learning, which also improved my overall class climate. The materials I have requested for this project will be used to increase STEM activities in my classroom this year. I have requested lots of building materials so students can continue to explore in different ways. The KEVA Brain Builders Game comes with idea cards, so students can copy a pattern or they can make their own designs. The GLOUE Magnetic Blocks and Goobi pieces can be used in both two dimensional and three dimensional ways. The Bristle Blocks and Qualors Puzzle Sticks have endless possibilities for building and creating, but I will come up with direction cards for both sets to give students some focus on what they need to build without telling them exactly what to build. Each time they build and create with these materials, they will be tapping into their creativity while learning how to negotiate and work with others. They will find new ways to use these materials through different open ended challenges. Having these materials available will increase my capability to provide new and different STEM experiences for my whole class.
