The classroom should invite students to learn in a space where they feel welcome and comfortable. Currently the room is crowded with desks and we have few options for flexibility. It is very difficult to gather on the carpet due to lack of floor space. The goal is to create more room for movement and collaboration in the classroom. By providing a high top table, a low table, stools, bean bags, and other options students will have a more relaxed atmosphere in which to take their time, relax, and be reflective as they work towards mastery and understanding of third grade standards. Classroom design matters to how students engage in learning. By providing students with some control of their surroundings they will become more involved in their work. Today's learning needs include individual study, group work, presentations, peer-to-peer discussion, and one-on-one instruction. Having a more flexible classroom will support these needs as well as students' diverse learning styles.
