Each year my Kindergarten class does an author study on the innovative and creative works of Mo Willems. When I introduce my students to Mo's books, they catch on fire with a love and excitement for reading like I've rarely seen before. I used to get a similar reaction from the beloved works of Dr. Seuss, and we still love him, but Mo Willems books are magic to kids of this generation and he captures their attention in a way that not many other children's authors can. Once I introduce my students to Mo Willems' books, they just can't get enough! My school librarian can't keep them on the shelves and I find myself running to every public library trying to find enough to stock my classroom! My heart swells as I watch their hungry little eyes gobble up the words on the pages and hear them giggle with delight at Mo's humor. My school librarian tells me that my kids are still trying to check out his books from her in 3rd and 4th grade, even though they are probably too old for them, just because they loved them so much when they were in my class. The NAEYC reports that 34% of incoming Kindergarteners lack the basic language skills to learn how to read. Putting books that children love directly into their hands, full of new words, plots, and engaging illustrations, provides them with endless opportunities to build language and literacy skills and sets the stage for future confident, independent readers. Mo Willems said, “We create our work for children not because they're "cute," but because they're human beings, deserving of respect.” This is why he writes and this is why I teach.
