As my students embark on a new 1st grade math curriculum, they will see new skills and number concepts modeled by the 100 bead Rekenrek. New addition and subtraction strategies will be demonstrated for the class. They will use the unilink cubes to practice these new number concepts through activities and games. My students will use the pattern blocks to learn and see how shapes can be decomposed into other shapes and composed into new shapes. Giving my students these hands-on materials will help them to move from a concrete understanding of math concepts to an abstract understanding and a firm foundation upon which later math understanding can be built. The dry erase pockets will be used on a daily basis as a "personal" whiteboard for recording answers through guided practice with the dry erase markers. They will solve real word problems to build their problem solving skills.
