I teach first grade at a public elementary school in Melbourne, FL. Seventy-five percent of the students enrolled in Sabal qualify for free/reduced lunch. We are a Title 1 school. I have been teaching at Sabal for twenty-one years. I have taught first, second, third, and fourth grades. Sabal is a small school with about 550 students. My classroom may have between 15 and 20 students. The children are between 6 and eight years old. Some of these students are English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), and/or have a medical diagnosis like ADHD or ASD. My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. They come from homes where their caregivers do the best they can to take care of them. Although we sometimes have challenges, we continue to persist and build each other up so we can all be the best person we can- students and teacher alike!
