After teaching 5th grade literacy for 15 years, my biggest challenge is keeping my classroom shelves stocked with the most current and popular YA titles for my kids. Books go missing, get ruined, and let's be honest, books add up too! I AM SO EXCITED TO BE MOVING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL ELA THIS YEAR! My vision for my young adult readers is this: listening stations featuring Kindle Fire tablets with Belkin audio jacks that can each accommodate five sets of headphones. There are numerous resources for free audiobooks, as well as affordable paid subscriptions like audible.com. This project will allow me to provide the newest, most buzzed about titles to my students, and will be a great companion to my classroom library. During independent reading time, groups will have the opportunity to experience a title together - an audio book club! Reading common titles encourages deeper thinking and the sharing of alternate points of view. For example, one Kindle Fire 7 tablet with a Belkin audio headphone splitter will provide simultaneous listening of a title for up to five students at one time. Students will bring their own headphones and plug in during independent reading time, which is part of our daily literacy block. An audio book can be completed in approximately two weeks during class time. Cases and screen protectors will keep these tablets in circulation for years to come. I enjoy getting kids enthused about reading; this technology will help entice even the most reluctant readers to the table. Struggling readers will embrace it for the format, strong readers will love it for the content. Providing various genres and platforms is crucial when developing life-long readers. Doing this in a timely and affordable fashion will benefit all of my students, all of the months of the school year.
