At our elementary school, we focus on educating the whole child. As educators, we need health, wellness, academics, social, and emotional growth to drive the instruction. When we educate the whole child, we are producing students who take pride in their academic education along with students who are socially and emotionally well rounded. The benefits of structured recess will be displayed through their growth into productive, caring, citizens in middle school. My students will use the pack of jump ropes, balls, hula hoops and frisbees daily during recess to work on social skills and to be more physically active. Academically students are challenged more than ever and are subjected to high stakes state testing that often causes low self-esteem, anxiety, and difficulty developing optimistic thinking skills. Wouldn't it be great if there was one thing that students could do to lessen anxiety, improve their self-esteem,increase optimistic thinking, goal setting, and help them to excel academically. There is! Studies show that exercise improves optimistic thinking and helps students to lessen anxiety. In addition, students who have structured recess are able to set goals, work on relationship skills, and learn social awareness by understanding the social norms that take place with fifth graders. Structured recess not only helps students develop social and emotional skills, but those who participate in structured recess perform better cognitively because their brain is being stimulated in a variety of ways.
