Gone are the days of students sitting in an uncomfortable chair in a single desk doing the same thing as every other student. Students need options. Some students learn best by laying on the ground, or sitting on a pillow. Some students need a desk or a table, while others need to lean up against a wall. The one thing in common in every situation mentioned above is that it is the students' choice and the most comfortable choice for that student. Students learn best in a place they are comfortable. With my 5-7 year old students, many aren't used to the confines of a chair and desk. I let my students find the best position for them to learn. When was the last time you enjoyed a book on a metal chair and cold, hard table? Can you read with lots of people around and noises? Flexible seating builds motivation and allows for student success, while also allowing for students to spread out in the classroom and find a suitable space for learning.
