This year our school will be implementing Soft Starts for the first 15 minutes of school to inspire and get creative juices flowing for the rest of the day. Whether those 15 minutes are spent "playing" or "exploring," it sets the students up for further learning. Students will be allowed to use manipulatives to apply the math learning from previous lessons or they may have the freedom to just play with the math manipulatives. The 15 minutes of Soft Starts is a time where there is no pressure and no expectations, other than for the students to have a chance to be kids. There have been many studies that support student learning through play. Through playing games, building and creating students learn many social skills.
