In a science room, we often need to move around to achieve our learning goals. My students have always enjoyed having alternative seating solutions and opportunities to situate themselves in a manner that suits their personal learning style. Our classroom has stationary lab stations which consume close to 50% of the floor space. Students are unable to sit at these stations due to lack of lab chairs. Limited size in the classroom, accompanied by large immobile desks has always made flexible seating challenging, but now with COVID-19 guidelines in place for public schools, it is even more difficult to achieve this flexibility. Student desks are wall-to-wall, with about one foot in between, which makes social distancing close to impossible with full class sizes. With the addition of student stools at the stationary lab stations and movable tables, 50% of the immobile desks could be removed, which would free up much needed space to comply with social distancing guidelines and make it easier for students to easily access classroom essential areas such as the teacher desk, hand washing station, student supply center and fire exits. Now more than ever, it is important for students to feel safe and supported in the classroom as we navigate through these uncertain changes in education and in the world. Having additional seating options and floor space to spread students out, without jeopardizing their ability to adjust when needed and move around freely, would be exceptionally beneficial to the learning environment and morale of the classroom. Being able to utilize the other 50% of our classroom for student seating will give students the flexibility, freedom and most importantly the piece of mind that they will need to navigate this "new normal" upon return to the traditional classroom.
