As an educator and as someone who enjoys conversations around child development, time and time again I have heard of the benefits of flexible seating within classrooms. We are finding that they are so many incredible "whys" behind providing students with more choice and comfortability in regards to seating within a classroom community: -It increases collaboration. -It allows for cooperative, student-centered, and student-led thinking. -It helps students focus and provides so much motivation in their choice of where to sit. -It is COMFORTABLE. As adults, we recognize how uncomfortable it is to sit the same way all day long and for children it is the exact same! There are a few options that I am hoping to provide students with: Stools, pillows, rocking chairs, wobble stools, yoga balls, low tables, and wiggle cushions. All of these options will provide students with an opportunity to collaborate and work independently while being comfortable and excited to choose a seat within a space that is a home away from home. In addition to this, it provides students with the opportunity to explore their preferences. Just as adults have things they prefer/do not prefer, children also do and it is imperative that they have room to explore this. I cannot wait to see all of the ways flexible seating impacts our classroom. Our children deserve to have a home away from home feeling in our classroom community, and I know that this will significantly contribute to that. Thank you so much!
