This is my seventh year teaching kidnergarten. I became a teacher thanks to Teach for America and stayed on after my 2 year commitment. I have acquired materials over the years, but my class is still lacking many enrichment items and manipulatives. Kindergarten is a time for children to build their basic foundation for school. Research has shown that if low- income students do not succeed in kindergarten, they are more likely to continue performing poorly in school, drop out of high school, and are at a higher risk to become involved with crime. My class consists of 23 students who are between 5 and 6 years old. I have several students who lack a home-school connection and parental support. School is a time for them to feel safe, loved, and like competent beings.
