My middle school students are at a perfect age for both fantasy and self discovery. Through their engagement in the novel Gifts by Ursula K Le Guin I hope they will discover both a joy of reading and something about their own unique attributes and talents. We'll discuss themes of identity and the influences and choices that forge identity. We'll also touch on rebellion and conformity in the shaping of self as well as the ways in which families and stories influence us. We'll also be engaged in close reading and careful analysis of courageous characters who I think my students will connect with.
