Welcome to advanced language arts, an engaging learning community where middle school students are constantly reading, writing, speaking and digging deep to unearth their creative spirits. Now imagine trying to unleash your creative spirit when you are sitting in a cold, hard, uncomfortable metal chair for eighty minutes. Doesn't sound pleasant, does it? This is the physical environment that my middle school students have to endure everyday in my class. How can one be expected to think deeply and creatively when the sole act of sitting comfortably in class is a lofty undertaking within itself? My goal with this project is to make the physical learning space of my classroom more comfortable and welcoming, which will then lead to more productivity and creativity in thinking, writing and speaking. Students will have their choice of flexible seating that they can utilize during reading and writing workshop time. Couches, standing desks, wobble chairs and bean bags will provide more comfortable seating options for the students who just can't sit in a regular chair and feel comfortable. With all of this choice and comfort, I can't wait to watch the students' creativity soar!
