By offering my students a fun space for reading, I believe that I will find them wanting to read instead of me having to convince them to read. I do not want to go into my first year of teaching with an "empty" room, I want the parents of my students to see the effort I put into creating the warm, loving, respectful learning environment and hopefully be confident that I will bring that same enthusiasm into the school year. Again, being in a very low-income community, I want my students to WANT to come to school and be excited to learn. I feel that the supplies, while some are costly, are needed in order to reach each student's interest level and learning style. The chair bands will be very beneficial for fidgety five and six year olds; they will allow the children to fidget, yet stay on task, which will reduce behavior issues and increase learning. My experience with young readers is that they love the Biscuit, Pete the Cat, and Little Critter books, which is why a majority of my wish list items are from these book series. The idea in my head for my reading nook is to set up the Big Joe beanbag chairs on the outer edge of the rug facing the bookshelves to help create a separate reading space while being inviting to the students. Thank you in advance for your help!
