My students need recently published texts that will engage their interest while functioning as mentor texts for their own narrative writing. These books have all published in the past five years, so they reference trends and ideas teenagers can relate to. Students will choose their book club based on what book interests them, so they will build connections with classmates and foster discussions around literature, and how it relates to our lives, in our classes. These books will also be available for students to read during their independent reading time, giving them appealing books and choice for their free time. I've noticed my students are motivated to read books their friends have recommended, so having these books available will allow groups of students to read and discuss books of their choosing.
