Providing a sensory room can create a safe place to calm down, self-regulate, redirect energy in a positive direction and build confidence for academic and personal success. Students learn better, when their sensory needs are met. When students are uncomfortable or have an unmet sensory need, they are more distracted and less productive. The sensory room will help to address that learning barrier by providing a brief break as needed to address various sensory needs. Therefore, a sensory room has strong potential to decrease challenging behaviors and increase academic engagement and achievement. We would like students to be able to use the sensory room when they are struggling to pay attention or focus on a task. We would like to have things like bouncy balls, trampolines, light projectors, music, squeeze toys, tunnels and so much more. The sensory room can provide comfort and have a calming effect for children who need the movement to redirect their energy and allow students to feel less distressed.
