After reading an article titled, "Why the 21st Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks", and then looking around my classroom full of assigned seats for each student, I got to thinking. Why is it that we, as teachers, force our students to hunker down in a tiny desk and do all their work there all day every day? I invariably notice that when I have kids sitting at their desks, the noise level is higher, and the work completion lower. While I have always been flexible in where I allow my kids to work, it is time to give them more clear options, other than just "spread to a good work space". Walk in to my classroom and you will see kids on counters, standing at a shared standing desk, laying on the rug, or (everyone's favorite) sitting in the recycling bin while working. They love the opportunity to find a spot that is comfy, quiet, and best suits their needs. I want more options for my students. I am looking to add stools, comfy pillows, lap desks, kneeling pads, and stability balls to their list of choices. To aid in the organization of this flexible seating, each student will have a plastic bin to house all of their school supplies. Your donation to this project will make my 3rd graders work environment more natural, comfortable, and productive.
