Having to learn in a dilapidated portable classroom is not the most conducive environment for learning. The bungalow was meant to be a temporary classroom that has been in use for over 15 years. My students live in a low income, industrial neighborhood. We are surrounded by factories that my of my student's parents have employment there. The students all receive free breakfast and lunch and benefit biweekly from the food bank. Our current classroom rug is a least ten years old. It is faded, frayed and stained from the years of use. The custodian's attempt to clean the rug yields no results. The rug looks extremely unsanitary. The children are reluctant to sit on it yet they have no other choice for whole group learning on the rug. New rugs were promised 2 years ago but due to the continuing cuts in the budget they never were purchased. Now that the economy situation is worse and the school is making due without many of the necessities- having a new rug is not even an option.
