My Reading Skills classroom will be pioneering flexible seating, which empowers the students to choose the type of desk and chair that works best for their type of learning. My students are currently sitting in molded, one-piece chair desks donated from a local college. Many students have complained of discomfort and lack of adequate space to work. And any student who is left-handed finds the desks impossible. By having new floor pillows, chairs, and a variety of options of seating, I hope to meet the needs of all my students. Flexible seating has shown to improve student physical and mental health by allowing them to move, bounce, rock, lean or stand. It also helps students who have ADD, ADHD, and ASD to stay focused and productive. When students are comfortable, they are more willing to work and share, which leads to lively discussions and constructive collaboration. I'm incredibly excited to share this new opportunity with my in-coming and future 7th graders.
