Home/school communication is crucial in the early elementary years. The sign in communication center will be the first thing students access when they enter in the morning and the last when they leave. They will be able to house their first grade binders that are filled with important information connecting home and school. It also makes it possible for families to view important postings connected to the happenings of our classroom! Organization of materials is key to building independence. Easily accessible, differentiated materials gives students the opportunity to choose "just right" papers, writing materials, books, math games, etc. that promote successful experiences and ultimately guide them in understanding themselves as learners. There is voice in choice! Being able to have identified areas where students can gather materials independently, such as writing trays filled with differentiated booklets, a shelf of math games, pencils, pens, markers and erasers ready to go is important in developing routine and structures within the classroom. Students will have a comfortable, predictable classroom environment where there is no unknown and they have a choice of what works best for them!
