This past school year, I began implementing a few flexible seating options (yoga mats, balance balls, and lap desks) My students LOVED it and what a difference I saw in their ownership of learning. After this school year, I am hoping to incorporate more flexible seating options in my classroom. Flexible seating encourages choice, collaboration, comfort, and community. With the flexible seating options, the students will have the opportunity to decide how and where they learn. It's important that the students are not always restricted to the traditional desk and chair. This year I am transitioning away from traditional desks and moving to tables. No worries...I am still keeping a few desks. ;) I'm looking to get wobble stools, cushions, and a variety of other seating options that will provide the students with an additional seat choice. The students will be able to choose between the stools, balance balls, and floor seats. I believe that a classroom should be a safe and healthy learning environment at all times, and providing students with choices is an important part of that. Students with kinesthetic needs (or should I say...kids!) need the freedom to wiggle when they're tired or excited, spread their work out on a carpet to get a big-picture view and escape to do their assignment in a quiet and comfortable space. Studies show that these types of seats promote better poster and concentration as well as more engagement and brain function. These also provide an excellent way for students to expel all of that cooped up energy in a productive way!
