In my seventh grade language arts classes, my students are required to have a book for independent reading at all times. Students choose their own books for independent reading, which should motivate them to read more and provide them with opportunities to fall in love with literature. But what happens when students cannot find books that interest them ? Independent reading then becomes a chore, a "going through the motions" exercise of fake reading and little to no learning-- exactly the opposite of what I am trying to accomplish. When I send my students to the shelves of my class library, I want them to easily find books with diverse characters and situations-- books that are, as my 7th graders would say, #relatable! By filling my class library with quality literature from current best selling young adult authors like Jason Reynolds, Pablo Cartaya, Aisha Saeed, Kwame Alexander, Tomi Adeyemi, and Erika L. Sánchez, my students will have access to books that will speak to them on a deep and personal level. I cannot wait to see their eyes light up when they discover that books just for them do exist! I cannot wait for the rich discussions we will have about these novels! Thank you so much for helping me make this a reality.
