My rural first grade students are very curious and eager to interact with technology. At a recent summer workshop, I was introduced to Bee Bots, a beginning coding experience. I was able to see first hand, great examples of how technology use in a classroom can motivate students. At the first grade level, students are just beginning to "get a handle" on how technology can impact their learning. The use of classroom tablets has sparked their interest greatly! The hands on involvement allows them to try new possibilities to succeed with each project they attempt. Teaching students to code involves using problem solving skills so very important to their future life experiences. The use of coding can be applied across several subject areas. Learning these valuable skills at this level will be crucial as they grow into 21st century learners.
