In the 5th grade students work to solidify their reading comprehension skills. By providing students with various coloring media, students can use meaningful abstract symbols to aid in developing and deepening comprehension in texts of all genres. Students will use the colored pencils and markers to construct thumbnail sketches with symbols to help in remembering the text. Then they will use their symbols as a means to synthesize their understanding of a text in order to infer main ideas and themes of the text. Once students infer the main idea and theme of a text students will use the paper, scissors, and glue to create a cut paper collage using their abstract symbols to depict the main idea and theme of the text. Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which learners demonstrate and construct understandings through an art form, engaging in the creative process which connects art to another subject area and meets the evolving objectives of both. With these art supplies, students will be engaged in constructing meaning of text through art by using self-created abstract symbols. Symbols are used throughout our lives to represent the meaning of something by using a picture. Therefore, students will be able to apply skills learned through the project to real life experiences as well as improve their reading comprehension.
