My students currently attend a New Mexico school where our kindergarten classroom ratio for technology is one device for every 3-4 students. By the end of this year my goal is to get my class at a ratio of 2 students for every one device. This project is the first step in helping us reach that goal! Technology in the classroom is becoming increasingly important in order for students to be proficient readers and writers; I want to begin fostering these fundamental skills in kindergarten! In New Mexico for the end of year state proficiency exams, third grade students must be able to type a three to five paragraph essay. At this point in their educational careers, most third graders have had minimal exposure to technology as part of academic instruction. It is my philosophy that if we begin exposing students as young as Kindergarten to technology in the classroom, then this will aid our students in future academic success. Increasing the amount of technology accessible to students in the classroom will provide more opportunities for interactive and collaborative learning, while also preparing them to meet future educational requirements. There are various applications available on the iPad that will lead students in reading and writing exercises, while simultaneously promoting independent learning. Furthermore, we can engage students by taking virtual field trips, listening to stories via internet platforms, video recording student responses, and exploring research topics. The possibilities are endless!
