As the sole school counselor at a school that serves students from all over the state, I have teens in and out of my office all day. They come to me to vent, seeking advice and to learn skills and to have an adult who listens. In my past work experiences, having a relaxing and calm environment, with tools to help deescalate emotions in a physically and emotionally safe place, allows for more sharing and opening up of teens. This enables our counseling sessions to be meaningful and productive, thus assisting them on their academic, social and emotional success. Like everyone else, we all get distracted at times, and as a counselor, it is my goal to have a place where they feel safe and welcome. Some students have a place outside of school where they feel comfortable, but for others, my office is probably the only place that's comfortable. I want to create this space for them to honestly talk about how they are doing and making sure they are doing the best for themselves and others. We need an aromatherapy diffuser, bungee chair, an area rug, and fidget toys that will provide a comfortable space and opportunities to develop coping skills through some of the fidgets and coping games. These materials will make the counseling office more comfortable for all who enter.
