According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2011), the ELL population is the fastest growing group of students in the classroom in the United States. These students are required to meet the same standards that non-ELL students are required to achieve, in spite of language barriers. Newcomers, especially, need intensive English language immersion with literacy development and content instruction because they often have had limited or no formal education. Use of Listening Center activities will allow me to facilitate and moderate the ELA and Math state mandated curriculum while allowing the students to independently have access to additional resources, and connect to their background information which is essential for the transfer of knowledge. Additionally, immediate feedback gives the students power that they never had before. ELA and Math Listening Center activities will give me the flexibility to implement Best Practices that offer engaging, creative, interactive, child and teacher-friendly activities in an entertaining format. Social, instructional, and academic language becomes fun and easy! Just some Best Practices for effectively teaching ELL students through the use of these of Listening Center activities include: • Making language and content comprehensible through visuals (such as activities which provide names pictures of letters and words), auditory (ELL student hear and think aloud while decoding a word), tactile (such as movement of fingers for solving composing and decomposing math problems), and linguistic support ( activities which adjust the instructional lesson so that each student can hear and respond to his own language proficiency level). • Provide hands-on activities by allowing the ELL students to respond to oral prompts to manipulate objects, letters, words, and even sentences. By doing so, academic concepts become meaningful. • Listening Center activities promote oral language development through production and interaction.
